2 pounds ground beef
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 celery ribs with leaves, chopped
1/4 cup chopped green pepper
15 oz. can crushed tomatoes
1/4 cup ketchup
2 T. brown sugar
1 T. white vinegar
1 T. Worcestershire sauce
1 T. steak sauce
1/2 t. garlic salt
1/4 t. ground mustard
1/4 t. paprika
8 to 10 hamburger or hoagie buns, split
In a Dutch oven over medium heat, cook the beef, onion,
celery and green pepper until meat is no longer pink and
the vegetables are tender; drain.
Stir in the next nine ingredients. Simmer, uncovered, for
35-40 minutes or until heated through, stirring occasionally.
Spoon about 1/2 cup meat mixture onto each bun.
The mixture was a little too thin to suit me, so I mixed 1 tablespoon of cornstarch
in 2 tablespoons of water and then stirred into the mixture. I cooked and stirred for
about 3 minutes until the mixture thickened and the cornstarch was cooked.
I will freeze any leftovers in greased muffin tins and then pop out and put into
freezer bags for longer storage. Should make for easy snacks or meals.
Yield: 10 servings.
